A Kid’s-Eye-View
A few weeks ago, Jim’s brother, Steve, and his little whiz kid, Dylan, spent the weekend with us in Nashville.
Paul Harvey is the most listened-to radio personality in America. And, Paul Harvey News is the largest one-man network in the world!
It was May 10, 1976 that Mr. Harvey began a series of programs on the ABC Radio Networks entitled “The Rest of the Story“, which delve into the forgotten or little-known facts behind stories of famous people and events.
“The Rest of the Story” reveals true anecdotes about famous people or historic incidents, always with a unique twist at the end.
I set out to learn more about this well-respected voice on radio, and here’s what I found…

In the car the other day, I heard a catchy little song on a Christian radio station.
I wasn’t exactly sure what it was saying, so I turned it up and heard something about: “What if cartoons got saved?… They’d start singing praise in a whole new way.”
The guy (Chris Rice, a Dove award-winning singer/songwriter) was singing “Hallelujah” in a variety of different cartoon characters’ voices.
To give you an idea, here’s one verse:
Fred and Wilma Flintstone sing: ya-ba-daba-lujah
Scooby-do and Shaggy: scooby-do-be-lujah
And the Jetson’s dog named Astro: ra-ra-ru-jah
And, the final verse:
Now there’s a point to this looney tune
I’m not an animaniac, but there’s a lot of praising to do
And cartoons weren’t made for that
It’s our job. Oh, yeah.

Turns out, this cute little ditty — guaranteed to make you chuckle when you hear it — has become somewhat controversial. It’s called “The Cartoon Song” (a.k.a. “Cartoons”).

We went to an NHL hockey game the other night with our “cellmates”, Neil and Abby.
Who played?
…Nashville Predators
Where’d we sit?
…Section 303 (a.k.a. Cell Block 303)
When was it?
…the first NHL game of the season! (October 5, 2005)
What about the hockey SWAG?
What made this night especially interesting (in addition to knowing that every NHL team in the country was playing hockey on this night …for real!) was the fact that they handed out free miniature Stanley Cup trophies to everyone in attendance.
It was in honor of the fact that the Nashville Predators will be taking home the “real” Stanley Cup trophy in June, of course!
Now, most of the things we receive as giveaways at sporting events just end up sitting around in a big memorabilia box, treated as if they’re some sort of valuable piece of NHL hockey history.
It’s like, “I’m sure we’ll find a great use for that… someday!”
Yeah right.
Well, in an effort to stop collecting more “stuff” and start USING what we’ve got lying around the house, the four of us found some really creative uses for hockey SWAG like these miniature Stanley Cup hockey trophies.
Were it not for seeing her at the movie premiere of “Elizabethtown” in Franklin Tennessee, I might not have found Patty Griffin’s music on my own.
Patty is a singer with soul, and she has a fan club that most musicians would die for. (Many of her fans were standing next to us at the right of the stage.)
I found her to be intriguing. She’s got a great voice, and apparently, she’s a good actress too — she landed a part in the “Elizabethtown” movie where she plays Sharon.
Some have asked for a pumpkin carving template for making UT pumpkins.
